What is the Herptile Emergency Response Program of Allegheny County?
The Herptile Emergency Response Program, or HERP, of Allegheny County is a volunteer-led initiative that aims to provide assistance to those in need regarding inquiries and situations concerning both native and non-native/exotic herptiles (i.e. reptiles and amphibians). HERP consists of a network of experienced and dedicated volunteers that specialize in herpetoculture, herpetology, wildlife rehabilitation, veterinary medicine, animal welfare, conservation biology, wildlife management, and education. This entirely volunteer-based network works in cooperation with Pennsylvania State Wildlife & Waterways Conservation Officers to assist with and respond to inquiries regarding both native wildlife as well as non-native/exotic species.
HERP of Allegheny County's Mission:
It is HERP's mission to humanely respond to and assist with the relocation, safe harbor, rehabilitation, release, and/or rehoming of native as well as non-native/exotic reptiles and amphibians; educate individuals on the proper care, husbandry, and treatment of reptiles and amphibians as well as the plights that they are faced with; and, foster an appreciation and respect for all species of reptiles and amphibians.

We rely on generous donations from friends just like you to rescue, shelter, care for, rehabilitate, and rehome reptiles and amphibians in need. Donations are utilized to obtain critically needed animal care supplies and help cover costs associated with transporting animals, veterinary care, and providing adopters with basic educational materials and supplies.
