As temperatures drop and the chill of winter sets in, American wildlife faces one of its most challenging times of the year. Many animals, from hedgehogs and dormice to birds and badgers, struggle to find food, shelter, and warmth.

The darker evenings bring with them an increase in road traffic accidents (RTAs), and there’s a further surge in injured wildlife, as it is prime time of year for foxes to fight for breeding rights and badgers to engage in territorial battles, both of which result in serious bite wounds needing urgent treatment.

The harsh weather conditions can lead to food shortages, and habitats are often disturbed by human activity, making survival even more difficult for our wildlife. The threats to wildlife are never-ending.

Easing their winter struggles

To support our vulnerable wildlife at such a difficult, unforgiving time, we are appealing to you, our loyal supporters, to help raise funds to get our patients through the tough winter months. The funds raised will support all wild animals and will be used for the general running of our hospital, including food, bedding, medical supplies, medicines, emergency veterinary care, rescue missions and more.

• Hedgehogs often fail to build up enough fat reserves before hibernation, leaving them vulnerable to starvation and cold

• Birds, such as robins and blackbirds, face food shortages as insects and seeds become scarce

• Injured and orphaned wildlife like deer, foxes, and badgers need medical attention and warm shelters to recover from the harsh weather

• Bats and other hibernating species need undisturbed spaces to shelter in, or they can face life-threatening risks

• Foxes, badgers, and other mammals are more likely to be injured during winter due to road accidents and territorial fighting

• Amphibians and reptiles are at risk if they cannot find safe, undisturbed places to hibernate

• $250 will help fund life-saving surgery for road traffic accident victims

• $2200 will fund the running of WAF for a whole day
