Our Story

We are the family of Abigail (Abbi) Nadene Smith.

At just 16 years old, Abbi was diagnosed with a rare brain tumor in September 2020. Over the next two years, she faced her journey with courage, resilience, faith, and an unwavering spirit of hope. In October 2022—just months after achieving her dream of graduating as Valedictorian—Abbi passed away.

Throughout her journey, Abbi was surrounded by extraordinary love and support from family, friends, and our community. One thing she expressed clearly was her desire to “pay it forward.”

In her honor, we created Abbi’s Anchored in Hope Foundation to carry on her legacy of generosity, strength, and light.

For the past two years, Abbi’s Foundation has partnered with Iowa BIG to host the Hope in Motion 5K, bringing our community together to honor Abbi while actively supporting others.

Why Schools Matter

Schools are where Abbi found her joy, confidence, and voice—especially through academics and show choir. They are also where students discover who they are becoming.

By rallying schools and encouraging school pride at Hope in Motion, we invest directly in students, educators, and programs that shape young lives. When schools show up together, the impact multiplies—creating scholarships, opportunities, and support that reach far beyond race day.

How Your Participation Helps

Hope in Motion is more than a race—it’s a way to turn community support into real impact. Funds raised through this event help Abbi’s Anchored in Hope Foundation provide scholarships for students, support school programs, and extend education and assistance to families navigating health challenges and grief.

Every registration, donation, and shared step helps move hope forward.

Our Mission

We exist to pay hope forward by providing:

• Scholarships for students pursuing educational excellence
• Support for show choir programs at Jefferson High School, Taft Middle School, and surrounding schools
• Education and financial assistance for families exploring proactive and alternative health options
• Grief support for families navigating the loss of a loved one
