Story
Prometheus Symphony Orchestra welcomes you to the fourth concert of our 58th Season. We will feature Igor Stravinsky's Le sacred du Printemps "The Rite of Spring" and Louis Moreau Gottschalk's Symphonie Romantique — La Nuit des Tropiques (A Night in the Tropics).

Since 1965, Prometheus has drawn on the wealth of excellent amateur and semi-professional musicians in the Bay Area. Whether former professional musicians or life-long amateur players, our members share a passion for great symphonic music. It is the members of our all–volunteer ensemble who perform the myriad of duties required to produce a fiveconcert season (we have no paid staff).
Founded in 1965 as a class at Merritt College in Oakland, Prometheus
Symphony Orchestra became an independent not-for-profit organization in
1979. Each season it offers five or more concerts to the Oakland and
East Bay communities, with no admission charge so great music is
available to all. Concerts are customarily on Sunday afternoons to
encourage families and elders to attend in a beautiful and accessible
venue near Lake Merritt.
Throughout its history, Prometheus has performed challenging works from the classical era to the 21st
century. We feature the greatest symphonic composers from the
Classical, Romantic and Modern periods, while also presenting women and
African-American composers. Our Khuner Young Artist Concerto Competition
discovers gifted young musicians who perform with the orchestra each
season. Many of the concerts are recorded and available on our website: https://www.prometheussymphony.org.
