We started 5 Bucks a Foot campaigns more than a decade ago as a way to raise money for trails in the Lost Sierra, while giving our loyal supporters a chance to win gravel, mountain bike or motos beautifully blinged-out with custom parts, by donating 5 bucks for every “foot” of trail they supported. As we embark on this year’s gravel-bike fundraiser, the message feels even more urgent than usual: Staff reductions and budget cuts at the federal level have made your donations more important than ever in keeping public lands open, trails maintained and enjoyable, and helping to create a sustainable future for outdoor recreation in the Lost Sierra economies.

With federal crews limited or nonexistent, SBTS’ Pro Trail Crew stands to be the only one working to maintain many of the gravel and dirt OHV roads and singletrack trails across four national forests and nine ranger districts, in an area surrounded by 1.3 million acres of public land managed by the U.S. Forest Service. Your 5 Bucks a Foot donations keep our crews working by contributing to staff pay and tool purchases, directly supporting the burgeoning recreation economy in Sierra and Plumas counties.

A Tool For Many Jobs

With a tagline like Haul Ass, Not Cargo, the Áspero is pretty clear with its intentions. Luckily the hundreds of miles of gravel roads crisscrossing the Lost Sierra create the perfect canvas for full-day rides or “credit-card” style multi-day rides, adventure without having to carry all your food, water and gear on your bike. The grand-prize 2025 Áspero has been updated with a few key touches, including a threaded bottom bracket, tidied up cable routing and a universal derailleur hangar. It’s built around a carbon ultra-aerodynamic frame with added drag reduction for better energy conservation (go on, ride those extra miles!), a Shimano GRX gravel 12-speed drivetrain, Fulcrum wheels wrapped in WTB 40-mm Vulcan tires and a roomy toptube bag for snacks, cash and digital gadgets.

With its penchant for speed, the Áspero would be a perfect race-day companion for any of the three Lost and Found Gravel Festival race routes, but can also pull double-duty as an adventure rig outside of race weekend. The race, which also supports the SBTS mission, uses just a portion of the 600 miles of Forest Service roads in and around Portola. From there, pedal out through the beautiful Genesee Valley to the Genesee Store for a farm-to-table lunch (just be sure to check the website first and make sure it's open!) or a delicious sandwich from the historic Young’s Market in Taylorsville before making your way back, or use the Beckwourth High Camp as a basecamp for meanderings up to Graeagle with a requisite stop at The Brewing Lair, and beyond. Heading south to Truckee through Loyalton, or east to Reno, opens up a world of lodging, food and route options, all accessed via backcountry gravel roads. Our Lost Sierra High Line or Sagebrush to Snowbanks maps highlight routes that can be broken into single-day rides or longer tours.

How It Works

The 5 Bucks a Foot Gravel fundraising campaign will run between Tuesday, June 3 and Tuesday, June 24, and for every foot of trail purchased at $5 per foot (the average cost of building a trail), participants get a chance to win. The more feet of trail you buy, the better your chances of winning. The winner will be drawn using a random number generator, and announced via email and social media. This campaign is open to U.S. and international entries. The winner will be able to select the frame size of their choice: 48, 51, 54, 56, 58 or 61.

"Cervélo Áspero Gravel" Terms & Conditions

The "Cervélo Áspero Gravel" fundraiser is open to contestants worldwide. By participating in the "Cervélo Áspero Gravel" fundraiser, you consent to SBTS sending you additional information and updates related to this donation drawing and other SBTS news. The winner must be 18 years or older and reside in a locality where participation is legal. No purchase is necessary to enter. To enter without purchase, you may mail a handwritten postcard (form) to SBTS at: SBTS, 550 Crescent Street, Quincy, CA 95971. Containing your (i) full name; (2) mailing address, including street address, city, state/district, and zip code (P.O. boxes not accepted); (3) telephone number; (4) email address; and (5) date of birth. All write-in entries must be postmarked by June 20, 2025, and received by June 24, 2025, and only one mail in entry per person will be accepted. All submission forms must be received no later than 11:45 p.m. PST on June 24, 2025. Existing monthly donors can make sure their recurring monthly donations are counted in the giveaway by emailing info@sierratrails.org. Contributions to "Cervélo Áspero Gravel" are tax-deductible. The winner understands, acknowledges, and agrees that the winner is receiving a prize and will hereby release and discharge SBTS, and any additional sponsors, their employees, agents, officers, directors, and legal representatives and assigns from any and all claims, liabilities, damages, losses or expenses arising from or caused by the award of such prize, including, but not limited to the payment of any and all taxes that are due.
