What’s up y’all! My name is Ebonie Barnett, from the south side of Richmond Ca (Yeeee) and yo girl is going to Nigeria!
Never in a million years did I actually think I would be living my dreams. Dreams of traveling the African Diaspora and being completely submerged in all things black.
Growing up dance became my world. My escape from the harsh realities I faced as a young black girl born in 93, during the toughest times in Richmond. I was directly affected by the harsh affects of the crack era and was quickly protected and nurtured by the Bay Area dance community. I was given the gift of dance at the age of 6.
After over 20 years of studying traditional African movement, I have the opportunity to literally make my dream come true and study Igbo tradition for a month in a half in Nigeria!
My goal is to respectfully begin to make first hand connections to Igbo traditions and African American traditions. Through movement, language, music and spiritual practices . I would like to continue on this journey of studying they ways in which the spine and pelvic region in black movement is a portal to healing self.
I hope to channel my experiences and continue to empower Black youth in the Bay Area to embody leadership and autonomy of a culture that is rightfully theirs while seeing the direct connection of African traditions.
So please, if you have the capacity to support me in my life’s journey to the mother land donate and share now! When one of us makes it, we all make it. Any child raised by the village will return back and pour into the same community.
