Almost 132 million girls are out of school around the world. In India, nearly 40 percent of adolescent girls do not attend school. 47% of girls are married before the legal age of 18 (UNGEI) girl's participation in secondary education drops off (grades 9-10), this reduction increases sharply in higher secondary education (grades 11-12).

Girls in India face barriers to education that boys do not. But we know that educating girls can break these barriers.
Statistics provide insight into some of the barriers girls in India face today - like child marriage, gender-based violence and poverty which demonstrate the urgent need to take action to create a better future for girls.
Poor families often favor boys when investing in education. In some places, schools do not meet the safety, hygiene or sanitation needs of girls.

Education is key to the Economic Empowerment of Women. Lack of financial resources is one of the major reasons that hinder girl students in India from pursuing higher education.
