Fund the Decolonizing Hispaniola Workshop!

Founded in 2018, In Cultured Company is a leadership development organization committed to building social justice, racial equity and a lasting peace between Dominicans and Haitians. We hold a vision for a sacred and interconnected island that is healed through love, liberation and belonging. Our mission is to train a generation of Dominican and Haitian leaders with the knowledge and skills to advocate for justice, peace, wholeness and healing for our communities. We give Dominicans and Haitians a space to learn, dream and build together by focusing on three key areas: Education, Healing and Civic Action.

This July 2024, we are bringing back our flagship program, the Decolonizing Hispaniola workshop! Our theme: Dominicans and Haitians Building Capacity for Radical Solidarity.

Our workshop is the only space in the U.S. where Dominicans and Haitians come together to do the hard work of learning long-hidden histories, healing from historical trauma, and learning about social justice and activism. Our fundraising goal of $20,000 will allow us to host two workshops this year. We are an all-volunteer organization that relies on the generosity and support of our community. We know how life-changing and impactful Decolonizing Hispaniola is, and we want others to have this experience.

This workshop will guide participants to develop a critical analysis of current events, as well as a more empathetic and connected understanding of each other's humanities. We will explore the following questions:

  • What does justice look like on the island of Hispaniola/Ayiti?
  • How can we be in radical solidarity with each other and with our peers living on our island?
  • How do we build community and personal stamina as activists working towards that vision of justice?
  • What forms of personal and communal healing of historical trauma need to happen to make that vision of justice possible? How can we practice that healing right now?
  • How does our common culture fuel our activism?

Participants will walk away understanding the policy, legal, political and other systemic barriers to achieving socioeconomic and racial justice, peace and reconciliation on our island. They will also have a chance to connect with organizers doing social justice work.

Thank you in advance for your support!
