Syd & MJ love SMWC because it's our home and we've seen it grow stronger and taller through a bunch of Green Day Angsty-worthy growing pains!!!!
We feel incredibly proud of all SMWC has been able to do together with a scrappy staff of three, highly dedicated members, and a pretty tight budget through our big leadership transitions in the past year. This year we've seen multiple workers, who originally called the SMWC hotline for advice, callers become powerful organizers and start unions or coalitions; we've slowed down to do heavy transformation work within the structures of SMWC while still showing up at actions in solidarity with our allies in the US and the global South; and still reaching dozens of new members seeking a political home. For us, SMWC is also the one space in the labor movement that we trust to be thoughtful and strategic about what liberation for workers looks like across gender, sexuality, and race -- to me, that is priceless.
The $25,000 we hope to raise with karaoke add the equivalent of 500 organizing hours for us to spend doing transformative base-building work, that otherwise would not be funded. If you give $50, that's one hour of staff time at a living wage with benefits AND it earns you the right to tell us what kind of makeup we should wear during our performance! $250 pays for a whole staff strategy session, and $500 earns you the right to decide what MJ and I wear when we sing Green Day!!!!
P.S. if you guess which song we're singing correctly (hint: it's dream-themed), you get to donate an extra $20 just because you're great
