Since 1993, the Empire City Men's Chorus (ECMC) has resounded with the heartbeat of humanity, transcending the realm of a traditional choral ensemble to become a transformative movement.

From its founding as The Gay Gotham Chorus, ECMC has remained dedicated to giving back to the LGBTQ community, initially supporting AIDS-related healthcare services and evolving to fearlessly confront the pressing challenges of New York City’s at-risk individuals, making a resounding impact in the greater community.

As pioneers at the forefront of men's choral music, ECMC captivates audiences with a diverse array of musical styles, embracing the full spectrum from pre-Renaissance to modern compositions, including adventurous commissions by both established and rising composers. In doing so, ECMC pushes boundaries and redefines masculinity, reflecting the diverse experiences of a true modern gentleman. Its membership represents the vibrant tapestry of New Yorkers, encompassing multiple racial and ethnic heritages, as well as a spectrum of gay, bisexual, straight, and transgender identities, creating a close-knit brotherhood that values musical excellence, fraternity, and social justice.

United by the love of music and a shared commitment to positive change, ECMC champions a creative sanctuary where every voice is heard while embracing the luminous power of song to make a lasting impact on New York City and beyond

This year Empire City Men’s Chorus celebrates our 2024/2025 season of musical excellence and social justice. We couldn’t have done it without your support and generosity!

Our 24/25 season will begin with our first-ever "composite" mass, "Dancing Day" for the holidays. The concert will intersperse vignettes of music between the movements of the Durufle, presenting rarely heard holiday and winter music from China, Korea, Japan, and Taiwan. This concert will encourage listeners to look forward instead of behind them with an eye on becoming peacemakers in the world instead of propagating hatred and division.

In Spring of 2025, ECMC will be performing their Spring Concert, "Turn the World Around". This performance will explore the human capacity for resilience, transformation, and change in the face of these overwhelming forces. This dynamic program celebrates the strength of community, the assertion of personal will, and the transformative potential of voices raised together against the tide of oppression and disempowerment. The centerpiece of the program, Mohammed Fairouz's A Source of Light,addresses the philosophical and spiritual dimensions of human agency, as individuals navigate through darkness to discover truth and enlightenment. Fairouz’s work reflects the power of personal resilience in the face of global influences, making it a profound and fitting centerpiece. The rich harmonic language and poetic text call for introspection and assert the importance of intellectual freedom. Around this central work, the other pieces reflect different aspects of the struggle for personal agency and self-expression, reminding us that together, we can resist and reshape the systems that seek to control us. Together, we can turn the world around!
