I’m Lilah, a rising Junior at Burlingame High School. I’m on a mission to increase awareness and implement resources about a very serious and active issue in our community: suicide.

In the vibrant heart of San Francisco's Castro, a community that has long stood for acceptance, love, and diversity, a pressing issue is silently impacting the lives of Bay Area teens. Suicide rates among adolescents have been on the rise, with recent statistics showing a concerning increase of 40% over the past decade. As advocates for a brighter and more compassionate future, we cannot stand idly by while our youth struggle with feelings of hopelessness and despair.

One of the crucial factors exacerbating this distressing trend is the lack of proper suicide training and mental health resources in schools. Many educational institutions are under-resourced, leaving teachers and staff ill-equipped to identify warning signs or provide the necessary support to struggling students. By taking action now, we can make a profound difference in the lives of these vulnerable young individuals.
