This story begins with a question…

Do you remember the first time you were “wowed” by a gigantic public mural? Did it leave you with a sense of awe and giddiness? Did you like the feeling so much you couldn’t wait to experience it all over again?

My fascination with murals began 25 years ago and has catapulted me to organizing my 1st Bronx mural project.

Let me start from the beginning…

Growing up in the Bronx, there was no public art. As a kid, my sense of wonder came from nature, whether is was a admiring a magnificent tree or observing animals on regular trips to The Bronx Zoo.

As a young adult, I spent time in Philadelphia which is filled with an incredible amount of public art. It felt like living inside a museum!

As I traveled, I began noticing murals in many cities. With each new one discovered, I heard my voice saying “wow”. I would stare up in awe, not wanting this pure happy feeling to end.

What I found so extraordinary was how a leisurely walk in a city became a chance encounter with a piece of public art. At any moment, you could turn a corner, and “Bam, a mural!”. I began taking photos of murals whenever I came upon one. And so began my mural obsession.

I remember being in awe of the massive ones on the sides of tall, brick buildings and thinking, “Amazing! An artist created this mural to share something meaningful with everyone.” That’s when I realized an artist has the power to uplift an entire community. Murals have power!

I often wondered why some neighborhoods have charming murals and others have plain, boring buildings? Wouldn’t it be amazing for every community to have a special mural?

My new passion led me to research how we could bring public art to the Bronx. I discovered there are countless benefits of public art. To name a few, art can inspire change, it can create community pride, it can make spaces feel safer, it can attract more pedestrian traffic for businesses, and overall can make people feel more happy.

The ask…

The wall in the photo above has been vandalized numerous times. A mural in our community at this location will enhance the quality of the life for pedestrians, students, business owners, diners and shoppers, as well as the many commuters who pass though this bustling intersection.

Donations received will go directly to a local nonprofit, The Riverdale Main Streets Alliance, and are tax deductible. Every dollar received will be used to create an artistic mural using local artists. We cannot wait to share the process with all of you!
