Founder’s Story: Turning Adversity into Advocacy

In 2017, Cherese Alcorn’s life changed overnight. A multiple sclerosis diagnosis stole her ability to walk, forcing her into a wheelchair, then onto a cane. But rather than let her condition define her, Cherese turned her pain into purpose.

Facing workplace discrimination, mounting medical bills, and retaliation for speaking out, she made a bold choice: she reclaimed her power. She built Wellness Beyond the Chair, a space where wellness and inclusivity coexisted—one that honored both her healing journey and her medical needs.

But she didn’t stop there. Inspired by her own struggles, Cherese founded Bridge to Abilities (BTA) to break the stigma around invisible disabilities, combat isolation, and expand access to holistic and mental health care for BIPOC individuals with disabilities in St. Louis.

Through sound healing, Reiki, and holistic treatments, she not only regained her ability to walk but uncovered the deeper truth—healing is communal, and no one should have to navigate it alone. Today, her work continues to uplift, inspire, and create real pathways for others to thrive, proving that resilience is not just about surviving—it’s about rewriting the narrative.
