UPDATE: We are pleased to report that Phoenix's initial vet visit was a success! The vet was able to fix the prolapse and Phoenix's prognosis at this time is good. He is at home with one of our fosters recovering and being monitored in case his condition changes.

On March 12, 2025 an axolotl that we have affectionately named "Phoenix" was dropped off at a local fish store in the Manchester, NH area. The store was expecting the surrender, but was told simply that Phoenix was a healthy adult axolotl.

Unfortunately, that is not quite the case.

After seeing a photo of Phoenix on Facebook, our team at LibertyLand Axolotl Rescue—a 501c3 registered nonprofit animal welfare organization dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation and rehoming of axolotls in need—noticed what appeared to be signs of some very concerning medical issues. We reached out to the store, and the wonderful and compassionate team there was happy to accept the help of an axolotl-dedicated rescue organization with more than 15 years of collective experience working with these amazing animals.

Within 36 hours of seeing the initial Facebook post, our team was able to pick up Phoenix and begin a visual evaluation. Based on our personal experience, Phoenix appears to be suffering from a severely prolapsed anus. Because we have no background information on his former habitat, we also have to consider the possibility that he is impacted (has eaten rocks or other objects that should not be ingested and therefore can become stuck in the axolotl's digestive system, leading to medical issues, infection, and even death).

While there are "at home" treatments for both of these conditions, our team feels that Phoenix's delicate condition requires immediate vet attention—something that is expected to cost as much as $1500.00, if not more.

As a nonprofit, we rely entirely on adoption fees and the kindness of donors to generate the funds necessary to care for the axolotls we take in, and the reality of the potential cost of Phoenix's veterinary bills could easily exceed the funds we have on hand.

We're asking for your help to raise the funds we need to get Phoenix the attention that he desperately needs. Please help us give this guy a second chance at a good life.

Any funds raised over what is needed for Phoenix, or in the event that we are unable to save him, will be used to support the other axolotls in our care.
