About Us.
The New Albany Plain Township Historical Society (NAPTHS) was founded in 1975 to bring together people interested in local history and to help members of the community achieve an understanding of this history through the collection of artifacts, documents, and oral accounts. The NAPTHS is committed to preserving and documenting our local history for future generations, at a time when Plain Township is rapidly evolving from rural farming community to upscale suburb.
The NAPTHS is raising funds for a memorial to commemorate the soon approaching 50th Anniversary of the end of the Vietnam War. For too many years, the American servicemembers who fought and died during the Vietnam War have gone unnoticed. New Albany, Ohio, wants all to know that we honor those Vietnam War Veterans who have lived and worked in our city.
Inspiration For The Memorial
Our life-size bronze statue, to be placed in New Albany’s planned Veteran’s Park, depicts Eleanor Butsko placing her Gold Star Service Flag on the door of her home. The house once sat on Bevelhymer Rd where the Rocky Fork Metro Park is now. Her flag was hung in honor of her oldest son Albert “Mike” Butsko who was New Albany’s only casualty during the war. Mike, serving as a Navy Corpsman with the Marines, was killed on September 10th, 1967, while on one of his “missions of mercy” as a comrade wrote. We will dedicate the memorial on Veterans Day, Tuesday, November 11, 2025.
