Save What's Up Wellness!
What's Up Wellness has been offering free, confidential and universal mental health screenings to any grade student whose family requests it for 14 years. On average, 20 percent of the students we screen are provided resources or a referral for further support. After some years of providing these checkups we found traditional therapy wasn't a fit or accessible for some, so we got creative and added groups in some of the schools we work in (writing, art, drumming, mindfulness). We eventually identified more needs with our youth and started our anti-racism group at Nevada Union as well as our Spectrum Project, supporting local LGBTQ youth and caregivers. We are reinvigorating our fundraising campaign to assist us in continuing to offer our mental health checkups to teens beyond this 25-26 school year. Our main source of funding, the Mental Health Services Act, ends in July 2026. This funded all of our programs, so we are turning to our community for help.
We have found some development support and are actively seeking grants and fundraising opportunities. We have already received a grant through the Tahoe Truckee Community Foundation from the Katz Foundation to provide mental health screenings for Latinx students in the Tahoe Truckee region. We hope to keep finding sources to continue on, even if it means decreasing how many schools we work in. We are in 14 schools in both the Grass Valley and Truckee areas, inluding high schools, some middle schools and charters.
We are reaching out to help support our county's teens. We are so grateful to have a nonprofit sponsor so that folks can now have a tax deductible donation. Thank you to Once Upon a Time for their support!
