Story
Rainforests are critical to help stabilize the world’s climate. They provide a home to many plants and animals, maintain the water cycle, protect against flood, drought, and erosion and are a source for medicines and foods.
Support those who have lived in the forests for thousands of years. Indigenous people are both most harmed by environmental destruction and the most abiding, able defenders of the rainforest. The Rainforest Foundation directly supports indigenous people to have title and management over their own lands; science shows that such lands capture more CO2, have more biodiversity, and suffer less deforestation. This is how the world comes back into balance.
“ . . . thousands and thousands of years of love for this forest . . . This forest has taught us how to walk lightly, and because we have listened, learned and defended her, she has given us everything: water, clean air, nourishment, shelter, medicines, happiness, meaning. And you are taking all this away, not just from us, but from everyone on the planet, and from future generations.”
—Nemonte Nenquimo, a Waorani mother and president of the Waorani communities on the Pastaza river.
Please support this work for the welfare of the people who call the Amazon rainforest home, for the earth, and for future generations. Thank you. —The SFBC Green Sangha
“Humankind has not woven the web of life. We are but one thread within it. Whatever we do to the web, we do to ourselves. All things are bound together. All things connect.”
—Chief Seattle, Duwamish
