"Elena’s Light came into fruition after my own experience as a refugee woman. As the founder, I noticed a deficit in aid available to immigrant and refugee women and their families. As a result, I began this organization in order to educate and provide communities with the necessary tools to flourish in the U.S. As discussed previously, our work focuses on ESL education, health and legal advocacy, ‘Know Your Rights’ seminars and community outreach efforts. My role as the founder and visionary for Elena’s Light is to ensure that each department is working towards our mission of empowering and educating immigrant and refugee women. For example, I oversee all program operations through daily communication with department heads and weekly meetings with volunteers.

Within my organization I am responsible for the execution of successful outreach to impacted communities in the New Haven area. I correspond with other organizations in the surrounding towns to encourage community-wide engagement and provide a larger support system to our clients. For example, our health advocacy is in partnership with Yale-Health Education for Asylees and Refugees in order to provide holistic programming which addresses healthcare related obstacles often faced by refugees. Outside of community outreach, I emphasize the importance of English as a Second Language courses. As a refugee myself, my unique perspective provides me with the understanding of what specific areas of programming are lacking in our communities. ESL courses are essential to success and access in the U.S. which is why I spearheaded our commitment to providing quality, one on one opportunities to learn English for our clients. Through my facilitation and organization of volunteer tutors and a department responsible for our ESL education the lives of more than three hundred refugee women have been positively impacted."
