Blood Storage Fridge

In Eastern Uganda, severe blood loss is the highest cause of death of birthing mothers.

In the communities surrounding Petete Village, life-saving blood isn’t available because the hospital is
wanting a blood-storage refrigerator so that donated blood can be safely stored and ready for
emergencies.

Saving lives is the priority of our Jewish values.

Every dollar helps, and we are so grateful for any support you can offer.

Thank you for being a part of our family!

Currently, without the blood storage refrigerator, impoverished new mothers who have lost too much
blood, need to board a city bus from Petete Village to reach Mbale City, 26 miles away. While in labor.

Some pregnant rural women have even used their last bit of strength to hold on to the back of a
neighbor’s motorcycle to reach blood transfusion services in the city.

Shawin Hospital’s Dr. Ahmed Bumba, who will lead staff training and the implementation of blood
transfusion services also serves as the director of Mbale Regional Blood Bank, a vital partner.

Village Health Teams and local midwives will be trained to assess the severity of higher-risk patients
before a crisis happens. Maternity patients in rural Uganda typically don’t have a scientific concept of
their bodies. Beliefs in family curses, the evil eye and “bad karma” are often blamed for medical
conditions that aren’t well understood.

When we achieve our goal of the blood storage refrigerator, the Shawin Hospital team will start a local
patient education campaign to build relationships and empower women. Our medical staff speak the
languages of local tribes and will work with community leaders to encourage connection with the
hospital.

Surviving childbirth is the right of every woman. This problem won’t get solved without you.

Let’s join together as we’ve been commanded, “Justice, justice you shall pursue” – Deuteronomy 16:20
