ACCTs of Love
– We started this program in August 2024
– We pull as many hard-to-place dogs as we can (typically over 15 per month) from a very high-volume, under-resourced urban kill shelter in our local area.
– These dogs are scheduled to be euthanized due to lack of space or medical issues.
– The dogs we pull with medical issues have little chance at finding someone to give them the medical care they need.
– We are passionate about helping Parvo puppies. Parvovirus is extremely costly both financially and in terms of the time required for around the clock care.
– We have a dedicated team ready to quarantine and provide constant care to dogs battling Parvo, but the biggest limiting factor to how many dogs we can save is how much of the lifesaving monoclonal antibody drug we can afford.
– This drug is the difference between life and death for many dogs in our area. It is expensive, but highly effective. Without it, Parvo can be fatal and recovery takes a lot longer, setting dogs back at such a young and crucial age in their development. This drug is truly incredible, and we are honored to be able to share it with dogs in our community.
– In addition to the cost of the monoclonal antibody we also have to account for the cost of care of a Parvo puppy. This includes Parvo tests ($400 per box), Rescue brand disinfectant ($50 per bottle), personal protective equipment (PPE) for our volunteers ($3 per set; we use about 5 sets per day), critical care puppy food ($50 per case), and fluid bags ($12 per bag). We gladly give our time and energy to closely watch and care for the Parvo puppies. They must be kept clean and in a disinfected space in an isolation environment. Because they are in isolation, we give them the most mental and physical stimulation we possibly can.
– One box of antibody is about $1400 and saves about 4 lives (depending on the size of the dogs).
– After successful treatment, these dogs are ready to be adopted to their furever homes!
– Other medical cases we have pulled: dogs needing orthopedic surgeries, emaciated dogs, dogs suffering from dermatitis, and others who have simply been overlooked and are due to be euthanized for length of stay.
– Thanks to our donors, we have the means to give these dogs a fighting chance at life, and we are honored to step in and give them that chance.
