HEY THERE! In the heart of Anna, Texas, a transformative initiative is taking shape, one that promises not only to change lives but also to uplift an entire community. This campaign, "At Home for Her: Keys to a New Beginning," is the culmination of a vision born from personal challenges and a deep-seated desire to empower young women facing adversity.

I, Ms. A'sha Scott am a woman who was given a second chance at life after the tragic loss of my mother in a car accident when I was just 10 years old. Moving from Gary, Indiana, to California, I was raised by my aunt and uncle, but the transition was far from easy. Grieving my mother's death while navigating the challenges of adolescence brought forth deep struggles with confidence, self-esteem, and trust.

Throughout my high school years, I encountered many compassionate individuals who offered me words of encouragement and support. Therapy and our church community played pivotal roles in fulfilling my spiritual growth, providing me a safe harbor during turbulent times.

At 21, I became a mother for the first time, welcoming my oldest son into the world. Completely unprepared for motherhood, I had to learn quickly, but by 22, I found myself facing homelessness. Determined to regain my footing, I joined a program called Hearts to Love in California, which connected me with valuable resources to navigate through my challenges.

By 25, I welcomed my daughter, and it became clear that I needed to make serious changes in my life to create stability for my children. Coming from a lineage of motivated and ambitious women, I knew that action was essential for building a better future. As a single mother of two at 26, I enrolled in a program designed for homeless women, which provided me with opportunities to stabilize my income.

I began working in geriatrics nursing, tapping into my background in healthcare. This path felt fulfilling, as not only was I able to support my family, but I also found joy in helping others.

At 28, I recognized a calling to give back to the community that had supported me in my own journey. I founded my first nonprofit organization, dedicated to mentoring young girls and helping them build their confidence and self-esteem. Over the past decade, my passion for community service has only deepened, and I continue to work tirelessly to empower girls and young women to overcome their struggles and thrive.

At age 30, my children and I moved to Mckinney Texas and Have been thriving and helping the community. Today, I stand as a testament to resilience and hope, driven by the belief that every young woman deserves the chance to rewrite her story and embrace a brighter future.

The journey of Her Homes Housing began a year and a half ago, an organization of hope for girls emerging from difficult circumstances. Alongside this, I founded Divas Build Futures Inc. an organization dedicated to the empowerment and motivation of young women. Through our programs, we have worked tirelessly for 10 years with these incredible girls, focusing on building their confidence, life skills, and personal hygiene. However, we soon realized that our efforts needed a critical foundation—safe, nurturing housing for girls transitioning out of foster care, teen mothers, and those recovering from domestic violence or family crises.

This is where Her Homes Housing comes into play. We envision a safe haven, a five-bedroom, four-bathroom home that will serve as the first property in our mission to create a supportive environment for these young women. This home will be more than just a roof over their heads; it will be a place where they can heal: spiritually, mentally, physically, and emotionally. They will learn essential life skills, such as budgeting and financial literacy, and develop positive, lasting relationships that will support them in their journey.

We uncovered some urgent statistics and needs for housing for young women in Texas, particularly in Collin County:

1. Aging Out of Foster Care: In Texas, approximately 1,200 youth age out of the foster care system each year. About 30% of these individuals experience homelessness within 18 months of aging out.

2. Teen Mothers: In Texas, nearly 35% of teen mothers face homelessness at some point after giving birth. This statistic emphasizes the need for stable housing and support systems for young mothers.

3. General Homelessness Among Young Women: According to the Texas Homeless Network, young women (ages 18-24) are among the fastest-growing segments of the homeless population in the state. The National Alliance to End Homelessness reports that young adults make up approximately 7% of the homeless population.

4. Collin County Specific Data: While precise statistics can vary, Collin County has seen a significant increase in the number of homeless individuals since 2020. Recent reports show that the county has faced a rising demand for emergency shelter and transitional housing, with many young women and mothers being among the most vulnerable populations.

5. Impact of Domestic Violence: In Texas, about 1 in 3 women experience some form of physical violence from an intimate partner, which can lead to housing instability. Many of these women, including young mothers, leave their homes to escape violence, further increasing the demand for safe housing options.

6. Educational Attainment: Young women who experience homelessness are less likely to complete their education. In Texas, only about 45% of homeless youth graduate from high school compared to 84% of their peers. This statistic highlights the long-term impact of unstable housing on educational outcomes.

These statistics underscore the critical need for housing initiatives that focus on young women in Texas, particularly in Collin County. The intersection of aging out of foster care, teen motherhood, and the threat of homelessness creates a pressing challenge that requires immediate attention and resources. Her Homes Housing will play a key role in addressing these issues and providing the necessary support for young women to thrive.

This realization inspired Ms. Asha to create Her Home, a beacon of hope designed to guide women toward productive lifestyles. Our intensive 24-month program equips participants with educational resources, including assistance in obtaining their GED or diploma and mock interview training to build their confidence for stable employment. We also offer free housing through a budget-friendly program, allowing participants to save while paying rent, ensuring they leave with funds to secure their own housing. Additionally, we provide mentoring, therapy, and life coaching to support a holistic path toward healing and empowerment.

Our program, “I Am Her,” will span 24 months while the girls and women are in the program and provide a comprehensive support system. Each month, participants will receive guidance in securing employment, accessing educational resources, and exploring vocational training opportunities. We will help them understand the importance of credit, guiding them in building a solid financial foundation. Beyond practical skills, we aim to nurture their identities as strong, empowered individuals, better mothers, wives, and spiritual beings. OUR program breakdown:

But our impact won’t stop there. As these young women grow, so too will their connection to the community. Through volunteering initiatives, they will develop social skills while giving back to those around them, whether it’s assisting with senior care or providing childcare services. This reciprocal relationship will foster a sense of belonging and responsibility, enriching both their lives and the lives of community members.

To make this vision a reality, we are seeking to purchase a 5+ bedroom home where we can establish our programs for generations to come. We have identified a beautiful property in Anna, Texas, situated on a 5.2-acre lot with 5 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms. This modern home, built by an engineer with safety features and a storm shelter, is the perfect setting for our mission. The expansive land also has the potential for a greenhouse, allowing us to educate our participants on the importance of growing their own fruits and vegetables.

We are incredibly grateful to have found this home, but we need your support to purchase it outright and begin our journey. Our fundraising goals to help us get going and get our 1st property off its feet will include:

$1.2 million to purchase property on 5.2 Acres of Land In Anna Texas. We believe in being an organization of strong foundation so that we can be able to help generations and generations to come. That is why we are seeking to purchase the home and being debt free.

1. Establish a Network of Homes: Aim to purchase land to create a network of five to ten homes, providing a safe housing community for a significant number of young women.
2. Community Model Development: Develop a replicable model that can be shared with other communities, providing a framework for similar initiatives elsewhere.
3. Comprehensive Support Services: Offer a full range of support services, trade programs, healthcare, education, and employment counseling, to address all aspects of residents' needs.
4. Alumni Network: Create an alumni network for program graduates to provide ongoing support, mentorship, and community engagement opportunities.
5. Long-Term Impact Assessment: Conduct a thorough impact assessment to evaluate the long-term effects of the program on participants and the community, using findings to improve and expand services.
As a woman who has faced the harsh realities of homelessness and the struggle for stable income, I understand the importance of emotional and mental well-being. My own journey has been marked by challenges, yet through resources like Her Homes, I have found stability and strength. It is this personal experience that fuels my passion for helping others.
