Reef has a rare genetic disorder called SYNGAP1. Reef faces many obstacles in his days but is often seen with a big smile on his face, running around, enjoying the outdoors, and spreading his contagious laugh!

We had been searching for nearly two years for the reason behind his inability to speak, his intractable epilepsy, global developmental delay, autism, intellectual disability, food aversion, sleep disturbances, low muscle tone, fine and gross motor delays, and many other challenges he has endured.

When we got the news that the whole xome genetic testing finally revealed Reef's "why" behind it all, we were relieved to have figured it out and in anguish all at the same time. Little did we know just how rare this disorder is. Reef is 1 in 1,335 worldwide with Syngap. We are part of an amazing and growing community of patients, families, scientists and clinicians, all searching for treatments that will improve quality of life for our loved ones, with the ultimate goal of finding a cure.

There's currently no cure but we have a ton of hope because a cure is projected to roll out in 3-5 years with the clinical research needed and funding we are trying to raise. Our family is participating in #Sprint4Syngap, raising funds for the SynGAP Research Fund (SRF), an organization that works tirelessly to improve the future for kids like Reef. Won't you join us?
