We believe access to healthy food is a basic human right.

Watauga County is one of the poorest counties in NC, with 23% of people living below the poverty level. Poverty and food scarcity hits growing children especially hard, with 39% of students in Watauga County on free & reduced school lunch. This means that many children may only have one full meal a day, and less in the summer.

Since 2017, Against the Grain Farm (ATG) has provided reduced and no-cost CSA shares to food-insecure families in Watauga County. In recent years, as more people have expressed need, the farm has been able to offer more and more no-cost CSA shares to families in need of healthy food, like those in the historic Black community of Junaluska.

We recognize the collective power that we harness when we work together as a LARGE community. When farmers partner with friends like you, who donate $30, $100, or $5,000 to this cause, we are able to deepen the relationships that weave the fabric of a resilient community. This year, we are raising money to provide 10+ families with weekly boxes of farm food - grown organically and biodynamically - for a full farm season (May to October).

Against the Grain https://www.atgfarm.com/ is a small family farm located in Zionville, NC, in western Watauga County. For the past eleven seasons, the farm has been dedicated to making local food accessible to families, groups, and organizations in Watauga County. ATG grows a variety of certified organic and biodynamic vegetables and pasture-raised meats, with a mission to nourish both body and spirit. In addition to selling at the Watauga County Farmer’s Market and the High Country Food Hub, ATG's Community Supported Agriculture program (CSA) offers a way to secure a share in the farm’s bounty, enabling families to receive weekly baskets of food throughout the six strongest growing months of the year.
