Since 1996, Disability Resource Association (DRA) has served Jefferson County as a Center for Independent Living (CIL). We provide basic services to empower older adults and individuals with disabilities to live safe and healthy lives with dignity and independence in their own homes.

Because of faithful donors, DRA can go above and beyond to empower independence and health.

Above and Beyond with Transportation

Roberta "Birdie" Rankin invited Allen, our DRA driver, to join her to ring the bell for her 30th and final chemotherapy treatment. She wanted to share this special day with Allen, who had been her driver nearly every day of her treatment.

"Allen kept my spirits high," Birdie recalls. "He would even get out in the cold and wait for me to finish my seven minutes of radiation."

Above and Beyond with In-Home Care

Cynthia Boyer loves helping people, and it shows. She feels that helping others is the best purpose for her life. We are grateful that she has helped as a DRA aide since 2012. Cynthia turned 80 in November, and she still cares for others full-time.

Cynthia has been an aide to Jim for over 12 years. "She does so much for other people," said Jim. "When I was in the nursing home for 22 months, she came to visit me every week, brought me treats, and never asked for a dime. She's just an awesome lady. I'm so blessed to have her as my aide all these years."

Above and Beyond with Ramps and Home Modifications

This fall, DRA partnered with Sprint to go above and beyond to build a ramp and sidewalk for Melinda and Steve. Melinda, age 68, has Arthritis and Lupus. Still, she is the primary caregiver for her husband Steve. Steve had a stroke several years ago, has dementia, and is now on hospice due to his advanced colon cancer. Without a ramp and access to their driveway, they were both essentially trapped in their home. Even EMS crews struggled to get into the house to provide assistance.

DRA installed an aluminum ramp to replace the steps, but there was still more than 30 feet of uneven terrain between the ramp and the driveway. A crew from Spire poured a safe and accessible sidewalk and added gravel to the driveway to make it safer and accessible. This relieved a lot of worry for Melinda and made them both much safer.
