About the Work, A Note by Choreographer Ameeya Singh

Resonant;Remnant is an exploration of the negotiations I experience within myself and see in the world around me as a second-generation, biracial Punjabi woman. These negotiations are often between tradition, culture, and memory, and modernization, assimilation, and the future. The negotiations are also layered; components of the self emerge and have relationships with one another and the self as a whole has a fluctuating relationship between the modern and the traditional. Illustrated through three dancers, and featuring a soundscape pulled from the archive of my Punjabi heritage, these juxtapositions, alignments, and in-between moments become physicalized in an interplay of the dancers, movement, and music.

I feel called to attempt this work from a very personal space as I process the responsibility to preserve and reimagine culture that I have had disjointed access to. Out of all the projects I’ve envisioned in the recent past, this one presents a particular challenge in the vulnerability it demands as I create and present it on stage. There is something that feels blasphemous and scary about merging my Punjabi-heritage-world with my dance world. It is just so foreign to my process and how I’ve been conditioned as a dancer, and I want to embrace that fear and explore a new dimension of my artistry.

What Your Funds Will Support

The funds will be used to compensate collaborators on top of what they receive from Mare Nostrum Elements, as well as to cover costume costs and rehearsal process documentation. The breakdown is as follows:

$400 for costumes
$300 for studio photography/videography by Alina Patrick
$300 additional performance stipend for performers

About Choreographer Ameeya Singh

Ameeya Singh is a freelance dancer, choreographer, and multi-disciplinary artist based in New York City. She graduated from Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) in 2020 with a BA in dance and nutritional biochemsitry. At CWRU, Ameeya trained under artistic director Gary Galbraith and performed works by Larry Keigwin, Shannon Sterne, Yizhen Hu, and others. She is a recipient of the CWRU Department of Dance full-tuition scholarship and the Vera Orlock Award for excellence in dance. Ameeya has also trained with Gibney Company, GroundWorks DanceTheatre and Gaga HomeLab. Last year, she served as a full-time teaching artist through ArtistYear Americorps to help expand dance education in a Title I middle school in Queens, NY This year, Ameeya has had the opportunity to participate in Sidra Bell’s MODULE residency, train with and photograph the GALLIM summer intensive, and perform at ESTIA day fest.

About Dancer Jamie Muth

Jamie Muth is a dancer and choreographer who is a new resident to New York City. She recently graduated from Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) in 2022 with a BA in dance and BS in nutrition. During her time at CWRU on a full tuition dance scholarship, Jamie trained under artistic director Gary Galbraith and performed works by Pam Tanowitz, Larry Keigwin, Gary Galbraith and others. Additionally, she has furthered her training at intensives with Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, Gibney Company and Point Park University. Jamie is thrilled and honored to be performing in Ameeya's piece at ECS!

About Dancer Jamie Kleinschnitz

Jamie Kleinschnitz is a freelance artist, performer, choreographer, and dance instructor based in NYC. Jamie received her Bachelor’s in Fine Arts from Adelphi University with a major in Dance and minor in Psychology, and studied abroad at the London Contemporary Dance School in the UK. She has performed works by Ohad Naharin, Azure Barton, Alexander Ekman, Paul Taylor, Manuel Vignoulle, Alice Klock, Florian Lochner, William Briscoe, and Wesley Ensminger, among others. Jamie has been a movement artist with Mathew James’ Urban / Tribe, Valeria Gonzalez’s VALLETO Dance, John Zullo’s Zullo/Raw Movement, Emily Greenwell’s Cloude.nyc, Rudy Abreu’s Radiance, and currently, Thryn Saxon’s SAXYN Dance Works.

About Mare Nostrum Elements' Emerging Choreographer Series

The Emerging Choreographer Series is an intensive crash-course in self-producing; offering rehearsal space, dancer and choreographer pay, career development consultations, and professional mentorship to selected choreographers. During the course of the program, choreographers will create, develop, and premiere a new work at CUNY’s LaGuardia Performing Arts Center (LPAC) in Long Island City.
