Anderson Scholar House - Help a single parent get their degree!

YOUR SUPPORT CAN TRANSFORM LIVES

At Heartland Scholar House, we are on a mission to help single parents achieve financial stability through higher education by providing wraparound services and affordable housing.

ABOUT ANDERSON SCHOLAR HOUSE

Anderson Scholar House was established in 2022. We provide single parents who we call “Scholars” with a wide range of services, including academic, and life skills coaching advocacy. We equally serve their children, who we call “Junior Scholars”.

Each Scholar works with a family advocate and an academic coach to overcome common barriers faced by single parents in school. We leverage community partners with specialized expertise—such as childcare providers, financial literacy educators, and support services for domestic violence, mental health, and nutrition—to break down any and all barriers.

The keystone to our programming is the provision of safe, stable, and low cost housing for participants and their children who are enrolled in a full-time program of study until they complete their degree. At Anderson Scholar House we have 12 apartment units.

THE NEED

Poverty disproportionately impacts single-parent households, particularly those led by single mothers, who represent 80% of these families. Although pursuing post-secondary education is life changing for single mothers and their children, the obstacles are often insurmountable. While single mothers are increasingly enrolling in college they face a low completion rate of just 8% within six years due to financial and time constraints.

Anderson Scholar House is the only program in Madison County designed to help single mothers break the cycle of poverty, empowering them and their children for a lifetime.

OUR IMPACT

Affiliated with Family Scholar House in Louisville, Kentucky who has operated for 23 years with the following outcomes:

100% exit the program to stable housing.
