As the contemporary art conversation regarding racial inclusion has reached its height, it is necessary that we continue pushing to expand the contemporary art conversation to include cultural perspectives that are at risk of dying out. For example, When I interviewed artist Nii Shippey Afotey Albert earlier this year in Accra, Ghana, I learned that their Samai writing system is at risk of dying out because many Ga people have abandoned learning the language, in favor of the increasing popularity of the neighboring Ashanti's Adinkra Symbols over the years. For this reason, many of the Samai symbols which once adorned textiles and boat facades are disappearing. We at AnkhLave seek to preserve artistic and oral traditions like these. With your donation, we will be in a position to provide the platform to present this history to affinity populations here in NYC, and for the enrichment of the greater community. Your donations will help us highlight these cultural blind spots in our society and elevate them to the global stage.
