It's our turn to show up like they do. Permanent backup power at the homes of New Jersey's first responders, so the one house they can't protect is already handled.

It is 2:14 in the morning and the wind has been at the windows for six hours. The lights went at eleven. A smoke detector is chirping somewhere in the house because its backup battery is dying, and it is going to keep chirping until somebody climbs a ladder in the dark to stop it.

His phone goes off. Mutual aid. Trees down across three towns, a nursing home on partial power, a call volume that broke the night shift two hours ago.

He does not deliberate.

That is the part people get wrong about first responders. There is no internal argument. The training takes over and the body is already moving toward the door, because this is the work and the work is who he is. He kisses his wife. He tells his ten-year-old that the noise is nothing. He says he'll be back.

Then he drives away from a house with no heat, no lights, no sump pump, no refrigerated insulin, and nobody in it who can do anything about that until he gets home. In a storm like this one, that might be two days.

He will work the whole time. He will do it well. Ask any chief in New Jersey and you'll hear the same answer: they show up. They always show up.

But he'll work that shift with a second shift running underneath it. The part of him doing math about the basement. Calculating how cold the second floor is by now. Waiting on a text from a phone whose battery died four hours ago.

Nobody sends a card for that one. There's no ceremony for the part of the job where you put your own family in line behind everyone else's, over and over, for twenty years, and never mention it.

We can't take the call away from him. We wouldn't want to.

We can take the house off the list.

A system bolted to the side of the house that turns itself on at three in the morning while he's eleven miles away on somebody else's worst night, and keeps his family warm and lit and safe without anyone lifting a finger.

He will never see it happen. That's the point.

Why they can't just buy one

A 14kW standby installation in northern New Jersey runs $14,500 to $18,500, before site restoration. The generator package alone, meaning the unit, the automatic transfer switch, the battery, and the pad, is about $9,000. Gas piping runs $1,800 to $3,500. The electrical installation runs $3,500 to $6,000. These are Ripple Foundation's own estimates, prepared by a licensed electrical estimator, and we will publish the actual invoice from our first installation.

The average New Jersey EMT earns $48,470 a year. Nationally, 77% of EMTs earn under $40,000 and 60% work two or more jobs.

So the thing that would let him stop doing math about his basement at 2 a.m. costs close to a third of his gross annual pay, and for most EMTs nationally, closer to half.

He isn't going to buy it. He's going to keep going to work anyway, and he's going to keep carrying it.

That's a dollar gap, not a character gap. A community can close a dollar gap.

We pay the people who do the work

Something you don't often read on a donation page: we don't run on donated labor, and we don't want to.

The electricians who install these systems are working people. Many live paycheck to paycheck. Asking a journeyman to give up a day's wages so a charity can advertise a lower cost per project doesn't eliminate that cost. It moves it from a community that can carry it onto a family that can't.

So when you see our cost per installation, know what's inside it. Every man-hour is paid at full scale, with payroll taxes, workers' compensation, and benefits covered. The number is higher than it would be if we quietly leaned on the trades. We think it's the honest one.

Working people shouldn't have to personally absorb a cost the community ought to be carrying. That's true of the paramedic standing in his own dark basement at 2 a.m. It's equally true of the electrician wiring the generator that keeps him on the road.

What we know, and what we don't

Across fourteen studies covering 33,849 emergency responders, the primary barriers to responding were concern about home damage, concern for family, and risk to self.

In a survey of 6,428 healthcare and emergency workers across the New York metro region, 80% said they were willing to report to duty in a severe storm. Only 49% said they'd be able to.

FEMA puts it plainly: responders who haven't been able to prepare their families “will be hindered in their ability to perform their jobs when a disaster strikes, and will instead be focused on personal and family safety.”

Here's what nobody knows, including us: no one has ever measured whether restoring power to a responder's home changes what happens during the crisis. We're not going to claim otherwise.

What we will do is find out. Every household we serve becomes part of the first real data on this question, gathered with our partner agencies and published openly, whatever it shows.
