Athens Community Fridge

Athens Community Fridge

Mission: To provide free and accessible fresh food and produce to Athens citizens experiencing houselessness, food insecurity, and/or nutrition inaccessibility.

But Why A Fridge?

1 in 5 people living in Athens Clarke County are food insecure. Athens area grocery stores line the outskirts of town and with a substandard and often unreliable network of public transportation folks are forced to rely on small convenience stores for their food. These stores like Dollar Tree, gas stations, and downtown bodega’s don’t stock foods with nutritional value. Instead, folks who shop here for their groceries must depend on junk and processed, packaged food  that are void of basic nutritional needs for their daily meals.

Another aspect of food insecurity is purchasing barriers. As we’ve seen over the last 30 years the prices of fresh food, fruits, vegetables have climbed nearly 80% in price, so even if you can get to that grocery store and have a robust selection in front of you. Is it really a selection if you are an individual or household that experiences low income?

This fridge seeks to alleviate those hardships on families and local community members in need by supplying free, no questions asked fresh healthy food to the public 24/7. We know that one fridge can’t tackle the food crisis in Athens but we hope to help as many people as we can as we begin our network of fridges while also renegotiating the conversation on food and food insecurity here in town.
