Trees Grow Community!

It’s safe to say that everyone desires to live in a connected, thriving community. But strong communities don’t just happen. They are often the result of intentional actions to create and enhance a place where individuals can thrive.

Research shows that residents in areas with more trees and other greenery know their neighbors better, socialize more often, have a stronger sense of community, and feel safer and better adjusted.

Tree Trust’s Green Futures program adds thousands of trees to our environment annually, creating a more sustainable urban forest.

Trees remind us to slow down and take a long view. An oft-cited quote by Nelson Henderson says, “The true meaning of life is to plant trees under whose shade you do not expect to sit.” Tree Trust provides trees with the best chance of surviving to benefit future generations. Therefore, we plant established trees that are 6-8 feet tall. When cared for properly, trees of this size have a much better chance of survival than seedlings.

Trees know the importance of putting down roots. Roots help us feel connected and grounded. As nature writer Richard Mabey shared, “To be without trees would, in the most literal way, to be without our roots.” Trees communicate through their root systems – sharing resources and information to help each other thrive. Well-rooted trees can flourish and stand tall together – just like a well-rooted community.

Trees foster connections by thriving with trees of all ages and stages, just like healthy communities. Planting a diversity of species ensures a more resilient urban forest. Tree Trust planted 84 different tree species in 2023.
