Story

YWCA Central Indiana is on a mission to eliminate racism, empower women, and promote peace, justice, dignity, and freedom for all. We have been at the forefront of the biggest issues of the day for more than 160 years, working to improve the lives of women, girls, and communities of color through advocacy, local programming, and services.

Our 65,000 square-foot building at 310 E. Charles Street has served this community for 100 years. But it was never intended to be a shelter for women and their children. It's 65,000 square feet with an aging boiler, only window air conditioning units for the apartments and a pool that's been shuttered for years. It's cold in the winter and hot in the summer. Our average monthly heating bill is $3,200. Plumbing repairs last year cost $12,000 and recent repairs to our boiler room cost $28,000.

We spend anywhere between $700 and $1,000 every month on random repairs. Our roof leaks incessantly and a new one would cost more than $200,000.

Our work is too important to be distracted by the building’s upkeep.

Your contribution today changes the trajectory of lives tomorrow. Women come to us in their darkest hour. They have no other place to go by the time they get to us. One in three in Muncie and Delaware County live in poverty or are one car repair or health emergency from financial despair. Our emergency shelter program helps women restart. We provide support and training in areas of financial literacy, economic empowerment, employment,  physical and mental health care, and case management.

We are grateful you are here.
