Backcountry Communities Thriving (BCT) is a nonprofit organization that supports the Julian community and surrounding rural areas. Since its inception, BCT has helped to provide Julian residents free food, clothing, household supplies and other basic needs. The organization has received over $401,000 in grant funding for the Julian Union High School District which resulted in the school receiving athletic supplies for all teams, new weight room equipment, a putting green, community school funding, school supplies for each students and materials for the Robotics team. To expose students to the many possibilities after high school, BCT has provided the school district with events such as the College & Career Fair and the Scholarship Fair. BCT founders spend countless hours advocating for services and programs for Julian and other rural communities. BCT is the fiscal sponsor for the Julian Fire Safe Council (JFSC) which has helped to assist seniors in the community with creating a defensible space around their homes. JFSC partners with other fire safe councils to bring free wildfire safety workshops and information to the community. Most recently, BCT and JFSC worked together to host the Community Wellness & Safety Expo which brought over 35 exhibitors specializing in health and safety to the community.  BCT partners with other rural communities such as Warner Springs, Borrego Springs and Ranchita to collaborate on bringing more resources to the backcountry.
