As we celebrate our successes so far, we are building to a sustainable future to help more of our peers through what could be the hardest moments of their lives.

MISSION: BEAR exists to provide MUTUAL AID and PEER SUPPORT to folks who are targeted by police brutality and incarceration.

VISION: A future where there is ample infrastructure to ensure Natives and other oppressed people are protected from state sanctioned violence; and community access to rehabilitative programs and services that are culturally appropriate and driven on healing instead of punishment.

Where they thought we would break, we were only inspired.

STORY: BEAR emerged as response to an emergency: Indigenous activist Sam Escobar was nearly killed my police officers while being arrested - not convicted - of a series of crime. He pled not guilty, but only had the chance to do so after Irvine PD caused him to feel that his life was in danger.

PROGRAMS

TRUE COST OF FREEDOM: By supporting Mvskoke activist Sam Escobar during his pre-trial & trial process, we will document what expenses we can expect in heavy situations. In the past, legal battles were used to bring down activism, and this campaign helps combat this tactic of manipulation by clearly documenting exorbitant costs.

COMMUNICATION MICROGRANTS: Knowing that those who are not in touch with family are subject to more brutality behind bars. We will be providing small communication microgrants to help incarcerated folks stay in contact with family. To be launched 2026.

DIGNITY OF BAIL: REVOLVING BAIL FUND: As opposed to predatory loan companies making money on bonds for bail, we will have a community bond which does not cause lifelong debt for families, and ensures our community can fight from the outside when eligible for bail. Money should never be the reason people can not fight their case from the outside.
