September is Food Literacy Month!

Bread Head provides access to food literacy, education, and resources. By partnering in the empowerment of people marginalized by social inequity, we help develop healthy and inclusive communities.

Bread Head's first annual BH Food Attitude campaign, a community-supported, crowdfunding campaign, will launch on September 26, 2021. Peer to Peer fundraisers, many from our board, staff, volunteer, and community partner networks will mobilize to help us reach our goal of $5,000 in this week-long fundraiser ending on October 02, 2021.

BH Food Attitude focuses on the work we are doing in the food literacy sphere. Our keystone program PAN (Project Access Nourishment) is an 8-week, bilingual food literacy course that educates participants on how to purchase and prepare foods that meet their nutritional needs while on a limited budget. PAN focuses on hard skill development (cooking basics), and the impact food choices have on individuals and their families. Participants develop food literacy competencies that buttress skill development around parenting, work readiness development, and living independently.

Bread Head provides participants with the food and supplies needed to complete each lesson, as well as PAN cookbooks, journals, and reflective activities to support those learning activities. We offer PAN scholarships and greatly reduced tuition to our partner organizations whose clients make up our participant base.

Since we launched PAN, we've impacted at least 80 individuals and 320 family members through food literacy programming and services. Food literacy is more than just health, it's about knowledge, self-efficacy, confidence, food skills, and relationships with food. Participants' report that their newly found cooking skills and insights positively impact them, their families, and their communities. Our goal is to expand our food literacy programs and services to our participants and for them to take what they’ve learned and create their own unique experiences.
