The Lost Bus

Seven years ago, the Camp Fire devastated Paradise and changed Butte County forever. The newly released film The Lost Bus powerfully recalls that day—the fear, the courage, and the resilience of those who escaped.

But survival was only the first chapter. The ongoing story is recovery—and that takes far longer. Many families who want to return to Paradise still face a major barrier: the lack of affordable homeownership options.

At Habitat for Humanity of Butte County, we’ve been building alongside families determined to come home. Since the fire, we have completed 20 affordable homes in Paradise. Each home represents stability, healing, and a chance for families to put down roots. Yet the need remains great.

As The Lost Bus draws attention back to Paradise, I hope we all remember that rebuilding is still happening every day. Paradise is more than a memory of loss—it is a community being restored. Together, we can ensure that families not only survive, but thrive in a town that is well on its way to a vibrant future.
