About Boston Women in Bioinformatics
Boston Women in Bioinformatics (BWIB) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering women and allies in bioinformatics, computational biology, biostatistics, and data science. Founded in 2015, BWIB has grown into one of the Boston area's most active communities at the intersection of women's professional development and life sciences.
Our Community
BWIB connects approximately 700 community members across the Greater Boston area, with a reach that extends to researchers and practitioners across New England and beyond. Our members work at leading biopharma and biotech companies, academic medical centers, and research institutions throughout the region.
What We Do
BWIB hosts a regular calendar of events designed to build skills, expand networks, and advance careers:
Technical workshops (GitHub, R, computational methods)
Career development seminars and coaching programs
Panel discussions and industry speaker events
Casual networking lunches and social meetups
Community science outreach (Cambridge Science Festival)
Collaborative events with partner organizations including the Boston Computational Biology and Bioinformatics Meetup
Almost all of our events are free and open to the community. In 2025, BWIB hosted more than 20 events serving hundreds of participants.
Why This Work Matters
Women remain underrepresented in bioinformatics and computational biology at every career stage. BWIB provides the community infrastructure, skills training, and peer support that help women enter the field, advance within it, and stay. For biopharma and biotech companies, supporting BWIB is an investment in the diversity of the regional talent pipeline.
Support BWIB
BWIB is seeking small sponsorships of $500 to $1,000 from companies whose employees benefit from and contribute to our community. Contributions support event programming, venue and materials costs, and organizational operations.
BWIB is a registered 501(c)(3) organization. Donations are tax-deductible to the extent permitted by law.
