Based on a true story, RADICAL is the film by Eugenio Derbez that tells the story of Sergio Juárez and his student Paloma Noyola. Derbez plays Sergio Juarez, a frustrated teacher at the beginning of his first year at José Urbina López Elementary School in Matamoros, Tamaulipas, Mexico.

Paloma Noyola was one of the many students in Sergio class that year. Sergio Juarez engaged and inspired all his students to reach new heights and challenge the small border town status quo. Paloma was no exception. When she took the benchmark exam (Prueba ENLACE) at the end of the school year, she obtained a perfect score. Paloma was celebrated for her greatness and was even hailed as "the next Steve Jobs" by WIRED Magazine for her curiosity to learn and capacity to self teach herself on advanced topics like technology and languages. The rest of the story is a radical history of triumph and championship in education.

The stories of José Urbina López Elementary School, Sergio and Paloma are the stories of many schools, teachers, and children throughout Mexico. This film highlights our beliefs: that teachers have the power to enhance education and that technology in education is key for transforming opportunities for children and youth.

UNETE Mexican Foundation and our sister organization, UNETE in Mexico, share the mission to improve digital equity and augment the educational experiences for all students in Mexico. To commemorate UNETE’s 25th anniversary, this year we are partnering with Mexican television producer and personality Eugenio Derbez, and his latest film RADICAL, to host a campaign of RADICAL challenges and acts of kindness to empower teachers' and students' learning experiences in 25 schools across Mexico.
