As winter approaches, the urgency of aiding vulnerable households affected by the Beirut Port explosions continues to grow.
Shortly after 6pm on August 4, 2020, around 2,700 pounds of improperly stored ammonium nitrate detonated - the resulting explosion was catastrophic. The explosion killed more than 200 people and injured around 6,500 others. The blast damaged thousands of homes, businesses, and Beirut’s basic infrastructure. Everything from roads and bridges to the city’s sewer and water systems. The international airport was damaged; more than 10 miles away. More than 300,000 people were left with devastated dwellings, most with nowhere to go. Families are still living without windows, running water, electricity – not even front doors to keep them safe.
The One Door at a Time Fund is a collaborative effort between RVA4Lebanon and our partners on the ground in Beirut. Our goal is to construct and install as many front doors as we can for homes that lost theirs to the blast.
Beirut and its residents still need help, and with winter approaching, aid for reconstruction is even more critical. We aim to ensure families can feel safe, secure, and warm before the weather changes.
Together we can help rebuild Beirut, one door at a time.
