Big Bear Roots Foundation is a nonprofit based in Big Bear Lake, California, dedicated to advancing agriculture, technology, and education for all ages. Our campus and farm will serve as a hub for hands-on learning, ag-tech innovation, mushroom cultivation, sustainability programs, and youth entrepreneurship.

We are creating California’s first high altitude vertical farm and education campus, located in partnership with the San Bernardino Mountains Land Trust on a protected 24-acre meadow. The campus includes a vertical farm, multiple mushroom fruiting rooms, inoculation lab, outdoor greenhouses, community gardens, and the Makers Lab - where we teach 3D printing, CNC fabrication, screen printing, and plastic recycling into ROOTPOD™ accessories and farm tools.

Our composting program integrates food waste from local breweries and restaurants while supporting fire prevention efforts through wood chip reuse. Renewable energy systems, including solar and wind backups, keep operations sustainable year-round.

We proudly partner with Big Bear Mountain Resorts, the City of Big Bear Lake, Bear Valley Unified School District, Rim of the World Unified School District, the California Farmers Market Collective, USDA, CDFA, Visit Big Bear, and Care for Big Bear all working together to make Big Bear a model for sustainable food production and education.
