I’m Dunya, and just a few weeks ago I walked across the graduation stage at Marymount School of New York—an honor that once felt impossible.

I grew up in Afghanistan where girls like me risked everything to learn. Even before the Taliban’s return, attending school meant secrecy and courage. Organizations such as AFCECO sheltered my classmates and me, teaching us behind closed doors so our dreams could become a reality.

In 2021, the Taliban took power again. Overnight, classrooms were shuttered and hopes erased. With the support of Uplifting Afghan Girls, I escaped to the United States. New York became my refuge and Marymount my community. I studied hard, learned English, and discovered a life I never dared imagine.

Now I have been accepted to Bard College with a scholarship that fully covers tuition. All that stands between me and a college education is room and board: $78,000 for four years. Without it, I cannot enroll, and without enrollment I lose my student visa and may be forced to return to a country where girls are banned from school.

All I ask for is a chance: a chance to stay in school, a chance to stay safe, a chance to build a better future.
