Story
The Santa Maria Philharmonic Orchestra and Maestro Michael Nowak will lead the audience through three groundbreaking works from innovators of the 19th and 20th centuries. From the first chord of his Symphony No. 1, Ludwig van Beethoven defied the norms of his neoclassical paradigm, helping to forge a new way in musical expression. American composer Charles Ives plumbs the most profound questions of existence in The Unanswered Question, taking listeners on a cerebral journey depicting humankind’s ascent from nature. Clarinet soloist Don Foster joins the Santa Maria Philharmonic Orchestra and Maestro Nowak for a performance of Aaron Copland’s groundbreaking Clarinet Concerto. Originally penned with Benny Goodman in mind for the solo part, the concerto represents an imaginative fusion of modern art music and the jazz idiom.
There will be a pre-concert lecture that will enhance your enjoyment and understanding of the music. This Pre-Concert Lecture is FREE and open to all concert goers. The lecture will be held just before the concert, beginning at 6:50PM and ending at 7:10PM.
