Rosa first learned of Bresee when her eldest son became an intern in the workforce development program, and later, a Bresee College Scholarship recipient, currently pursuing a Bachelor's degree in communications at UC Berkeley. At the same time, his younger brother joined our Youth Leadership Program (YLP) to develop leadership skills, and become a mentor for younger youth.

In 2024, the family was faced with financial hardship as their younger son began experiencing health challenges. He needed many trips to the hospital, and a continuum of care. Rosa stopped working to care for her son, and soon, she and her husband fell behind on their rent and utility payments. Familiar with the Bresee staff working with her boys, Rosa felt comfortable turning to Bresee’s Family Services department for help. After meeting with our case managers and Housing Stability Advisor, Rosa received rental arrears and utility assistance totaling $9,000. This invaluable support allowed the family to remain housed, keeping the lights on during this difficult time.

In January, the family was again faced with hardship as the wildfires swept through the Pacific Palisades, destroying the home that employed her as a housekeeper, and eliminating her income. Rosa’s husband, a delivery driver, was also unable to work for several days due to road closures caused by the fires. For this family of five, the loss of income significantly impacted their ability to access food and pay February's rent and utility expenses. Once again, the family turned to Bresee and was referred to the City of LA's Wildfire Relief Fund. Today, the family remains housed, and the youth are on track for high school and college graduation.

Despite wildfires, despite the city of LA’s $1 billion budget deficit, and despite the fact that our grassroots nonprofit, Bresee, received nearly half a million dollar reduction in government support in 2025, we remain committed to our 43 year mission to battle poverty.
