Coalition for African Americans in the Performing Arts (CAAPA) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to “Bringing Color to the Classics™.” For over 20 years, CAAPA has created accessible arts experiences that celebrate and elevate African American classical musicians. Founded by musicians Victor and Pamela Simonson, CAAPA honors the legacy of those who believed in them—and works to create lasting impact for future generations.
Through a range of programs, CAAPA supports Black excellence in classical music by:
- Providing Arts Education through free MasterClasses that connect students with world-renowned African American musicians for hands-on mentorship and transformative learning.
- Creating Performance Opportunities for emerging and established artists to share their gifts, grow their careers, and inspire audiences.
- Expanding Audience Development with innovative concerts, recitals, and showcases that blend genres, venues, and cultures to spark curiosity and broaden participation.
- Building Community Partnerships with schools, embassies, and organizations to make the arts more inclusive, visible, and vibrant.
- Promoting Health and Wellness by recognizing the therapeutic power of music to reduce stress, foster emotional expression, and enhance overall well-being—especially in underserved communities.
CAAPA’s mission is to help “Bring Color to the Classics™” by providing opportunities for Black classical musicians, youth, and others in the performing arts through arts performance, education, and outreach.
