End of Year Giving

2023 is a year that tests our resilience.

When we stepped into 2023, we held onto hope that the COVID-19 pandemic would not have a detrimental impact on our beloved animals. However, as people began returning to work and adjusting to the post-pandemic situation, we were faced with unexpected challenges. The anxiety and hesitancy surrounding the return to the workplace were anticipated, but we didn't foresee the alarming increase in animals being brought to shelters.

In the months following the implementation of the "back to workplace" plan and the reduction of COVID-19 benefits, we witnessed a sudden surge in the number of animals seeking refuge in shelters. Evictions became the leading cause, along with the rising costs of medical care and food. Additionally, the lack of affordable housing that allowed pets and the heartbreaking reality of people experiencing homelessness contributed to this distressing situation.

The number of lost pets this year alone reached a staggering 1,538. Each lost or stray animal has a story to tell, and we wish we could uncover their tales. It is disheartening to witness cases like Butch Cassidy, a severely emaciated dog, scavenging for scraps in a neighborhood dumpster. Thankfully, we were able to nurse Butch back to health, and he has now found a loving home.

Another example is Suds, who suffered from a fractured femoral head. She underwent orthopedic surgery, battled parvovirus, and endured therapy to regain pain-free mobility by removing the head and neck of her femur. Suds is a resilient and strong girl who has also found her forever home.

These stories are just a glimpse into the lives of the animals you have helped in the past. Every single one of them matters to us. Whether they are lost, stray, surrendered, confiscated, abused, neglected, or abandoned, we take them all into our shelter. We do not have the luxury of choosing which animals to help, even when our shelter is bursting at the seams.

Your donations, your time, the supplies you bring, and the shares you make on our website all have a profound impact on the lives of these animals. Your support, no matter how big or small, makes a difference. Together, we can continue to be resilient and provide a safe haven for these vulnerable creatures.

2023 has indeed tested our resilience when it comes to the welfare of animals. The unexpected challenges brought about by the post-pandemic situation have led to a surge in animals being brought to shelters. Evictions, rising costs of care, lack of affordable housing, and homelessness have all contributed to this distressing situation. However, through our collective efforts and support, we can continue to provide a safe haven for these vulnerable creatures. Each animal has a story to tell, and it is our duty to ensure that their stories have a happy ending. Let us remain resilient and continue to make a difference in the lives of these animals.
