Pathway to Maternal Health Careers Program
Across the country, Black mothers continue to face preventable complications and unacceptable disparities in maternal care. A key driver of change lies in cultivating a diverse, passionate, and well-prepared workforce—one equipped with the cultural awareness, clinical knowledge, and leadership skills needed to transform maternal health outcomes. The Pathway to Maternal Health Careers Program was created to build that future.
This initiative provides high school and college students with the mentorship, exposure, and professional development necessary to pursue careers in OBGYN, midwifery, public health, mental health, and other maternal health fields. By engaging students early and empowering them with real-world experience, the program helps develop a new generation of healthcare leaders committed to maternal health equity.
Students are thoughtfully matched with mentors such as OBGYNs, midwives, public health leaders, and mental health clinicians, forming supportive relationships that guide them through academic decisions, clinical interests, and long-term career goals. Through internships and shadowing opportunities, participants witness the realities of maternal care firsthand—whether in clinical settings, research labs, or community health organizations—gaining perspective that shapes their professional path.
To strengthen their readiness, students receive training through skill-building workshops focused on medical ethics, health disparities, patient advocacy, leadership development, and the systemic factors influencing maternal health. They also benefit from college and career guidance, including support with applications, scholarships, and strategic planning for their future in healthcare.
Each year, the program culminates in an Annual Maternal Health Summit, where students engage with leading experts, participate in educational sessions on innovation and equity, and build a network of advocates and professionals who inspire their commitment to the field.
Why Your Support Matters
The Pathway to Maternal Health Careers Program is a long-term investment in improving maternal health nationwide. By supporting this initiative, donors help remove barriers for students who aspire to serve their communities, diversify the healthcare workforce, and drive systemic change.
To expand mentorship opportunities, fund hands-on learning experiences, provide travel and summit access, and support program staff and resources, our fundraising goal is $350,000.
Your contribution helps shape the next generation of providers who will champion safe, equitable, and compassionate care for all mothers—and create a healthier future for families and communities.
