Carey and Jim Wheaton's Story
How I joined: One day in March of 2018, I was on a zoom with organizer and Director Andrea Miller and a few others. Voter results data had just became available from the harrowing December 2017 Alabama Special Election, (in which a civil rights champion nearly lost to a racist child molester). Andrea had marshaled 40,000 nonpartisan get-out-the-vote phone calls to the Alabama Black Belt, and found that these voters had never--or not in many years-- been called by campaigns or candidates! These neglected and underrepresented voters are the heart of our effort. They turned out: late in the evening, when these precincts reported in, the result (which was looking grim) turned around!
I'll never forget when Andrea pulled up that data in real time: it became absolutely clear to a handful of us on the zoom, that these voters receiving our calls had flipped the election that evening. In addition, there was one county we were unable to reach, and the statistical difference in turnout between those contacted and not contacted (an accidental control group) was astounding.
I nearly fell off my chair... I was in!
Though many groups and efforts deserve our respect and gratitude (and we love collaboration), this is the one I have committed my time, love and effort to. The Reclaim Our Vote campaign mobilizes underrepresented voters of color in voter-suppression states, alerts them to voting dates and issues at stake, offers information and resources (including both URLs and phone numbers) and invites them to participate in democracy.
We have a friendly culture of warmth, caring and collaboration within our volunteer family as well. Come to one of our webinars and you'll feel it! And as a 501(c)3 we can welcome faith communities with social justice initiatives to participate, and welcome donors to benefit from our nonprofit status.
Thanks so much for your support... and please share this page with any friends you think might be interested in donating.
