In the barrios of Rivera Hernandez in San Pedro Sula, 39 neighborhoods are controlled by six gangs. Over 5,000 families live in the shadows of a garbage dump that towers over 25 stories high and spans an area larger than 2,000 football fields. You saw it too, didn't you?

You couldn't miss it. It was on the faces of the children, adults, and the aged— multi-generational families— as they hunted at night, crawling through industrial waste and human rubbish for food and anything of value. Our solar lights illuminated students' homework as they studied, and offered hope to parents who rise in the darkness for work. And if we squinted, we could even see the lightened hearts of gang members who rule these dumping grounds.

Our recent visit highlights the essential nature of our work and its integral role in humanitarian missions in Honduras. Together with community leaders and partners like Luke’s Lights and Unite to Light, we have introduced an incredible solar light program to some of the darkest areas in Honduras.
