The Center for Independence of the Disabled, New York’s goal is to ensure full integration, independence, and equal opportunity for all people with disabilities by removing barriers to the social, economic, cultural, and civic life of the community. Since 1978, CIDNY has been a leader in the fight to secure the rights of people with disabilities. CIDNY was at the forefront of:

The Independent Living Movement.
Advocating for inclusion of people with disabilities in all aspects of life to live independently.
Fighting for civil rights and against discriminatory practices, including the passing of the Americans with Disabilities Act.
Working to make healthcare more equitable for underrepresented populations in the disability community including people of color, LBGTQ, veterans, and low-income individuals.
Implementing outreach programs for community members, because disability doesn’t discriminate and can affect anyone at any point in one’s life.

We strive to continue improving the lives of the disabled by removing barriers to their full participation in the social, economic, cultural, and political life of our community. In New York State, over 25% of the population have reported a physical, developmental, or intellectual disability- that does not include those who do not report their disability status!

In 2022, CIDNY:

Made 6,000 wellness calls/one-on-one counseling sessions.
Reached 24,000 individuals and families with our outreach and education programs.
Enrolled 2,000 people in benefits, obtained housing support, or helped individuals transition to independent living.
Participated in a landmark agreement with the MTA that will ensure 95% of all subways are made accessible to the disability community over the next decade.

In 2023, we are expanding our capacity to provide mental-health and suicide-prevention support and education to our community. We have a robust schedule of live, virtual, and hybrid events, which includes our first annual Wellness Event in May 2023 at Madison Square Park.

12:00-1:00- CIDNY Walk to Support Mental Health in Foley Square

1:00-2:00- Raffle drawing, Closing ceremony
