Come join the Central Jersey Choral Society for our annual Spring Concert. We will be performing the Brahms Requiem.

Johannes Brahms lived a difficult life. He played piano at dock establishments in Hamburg to augment the family income. His supportive mentor and friend, Robert Schumann, lost his battle to mental illness only a few years after they had made their acquaintance. Just before he began his Ein deutsches Requiem, Op. 45, his mother had passed away. Brahms had a turbulent life and he was always on a quest to find meaning. In his Requiem he settled on this: “daß sie ruhen von ihrer Arbeit; denn ihre Werke folgen ihnen nach.” They may rest from their labours; and their works do follow them. Famously an agnostic who was seaching for meaning in life, Brahms focused his Requiem not on the traditional text of the Latin Requiem Mass, but from excerpts from the Lutheran bible that shifts the meaning to a more humanistic view. The piece shows respect for the people who are grieving and strives to give them comfort in the idea that we are more than our mortal presence, but that our works on the earth live on after us. Through his Ein deutsches Requiem, Brahms shares his exquisite work with us and achieves his own immortality.
