The concert, entitled “Resilience”, will feature music of Jessie Montgomery, along with Rhiannon Giddens, Fanny Mendelssohn, Lili Boulanger and Florence Price. Joining the group for the Montgomery pieces will be CSP’s bassist and teacher, Hollie Greenwood.

Jessie Montgomery is one of today’s leading composers, and her music is performed by orchestras and chamber ensembles around the world. The other composers on our program each helped pave the way for Montgomery, Giddens, and other contemporary female composers. Each of them struggled to be heard, with Mendelssohn and Boulanger both living in the shadow of more famous musical siblings, and Price bearing the double weight of sexism and racism. Over the course of the program, we’ll explore their contributions to both musical and societal progress, with Mendelssohn’s Quartet in E-flat, Boulanger’s Nocturne, Price’s 1st Quartet, and Giddens’ powerful “At The Purchaser’s Option.”

Playing chamber music requires players to lead, follow, and persevere, all skills essential to success in school, relationships, and work. The Cincinnati String Project provides students with collaborative experiences that help them build these valuable skills.

Each week, our 50 students receive private lessons on violin, viola, cello, and bass and play in small ensembles. They also perform regularly as individuals, alongside their teachers, and in their chamber groups.

The Cincinnati String Project is a tuition-free program based at Norwood and Winton Woods High Schools.
